No! Please stop, please, please just sto -
As she awoke, a silent tear welled up and spilled over, leaving a cold streak down her face. Rosewyn sighed. She had been having nightmares about that night ever since. It was always so difficult to think about. Not many young princesses have to see their family slaughtered trying to flee her own home and kingdom. Not many princesses had such a powerful responsibility as I did. Not many princesses had to deal with so much pain.
She glanced over to her side table and saw the iron key laying there in the same position she had left it the night before. Rosewyn couldn't bear to wear it at night, it only made the memories more intense and painful. The funny thing about that key is that whenever she tried to think of something, or trying very hard not to, it brought the thought to that center stage place in her mind. She cringed as she reached out to take the key and found it was as cold as if she'd left it outside. Once the key recognized its master it instantly warmed itself, settling comfortably around her neck in its usual place.
She slowly got up, stretching her arms. Rosewyn turned her neck to the side and felt a sharp pain. Ugh. I'd slept on my neck wrong again. She sighed, again. She looked out her window to see the muffled light coming in from the windows to stop at her thin curtains. Carefully minding her sore neck, she rose from her bed and got herself dressed. She'd had to resort to simple clothing now. She didn't have time to pack a bag of anything really. The Ziria, an evil clan of creatures out to take over her former kingdom, had sprung a surprise attack. Another tear fell down Rosewyn's cheek as she remembered the last words her mother had said to her.
"Rosewyn, my dearest daughter. You need to run, get as far away as you possibly can, now," she had kissed Rosewyn's forehead, "I love yo-" Her eyes had gone blank. She had been stabbed in the back by a Zirian soldier. "NO!" Rosewyn screamed. She was bawling her eyes out now. My mother killed right in front of me. Then to her right she heard Ariel, her sister, crying holding Calanon. Then from behind her a Zirian soldier ran up and grabbed Calanon and threw him with bone crushing force at the stone wall. Rosewyn's lips frozen in place with fear, anger, sadness, and desperation, all she could do was sit there as she watched Ariel be decapitated not five feet from where she was sitting.
A fresh torrent of tears started spilling down her face. She couldn't control them, so she let them come. She sobbed and sobbed, and then the worried voice of her guardian and friend made her look up, "Rosewyn, what is wrong? Is there danger?"
She shook my head. "Warren," She manged to say through a gasp "I was actually just thinking about..." She trailed off looking into his eyes, which had turned from worried warier, to understanding friend.
"I understand Rosewyn," he frowned and looked down at his hands, "the memory is still fresh and rather horrible for me as well." He looked up then, with much effort, and formed a grim smile on his face. It didn't touch his eyes though.
"Well I'd better get to the days duties," He smiled then, and reached out and took Rosewyn's hand and kissed it. This was traditional though. She had always liked Warren, more than a friend. They had grown up together, before he was declared head of the Royal Guard. He and Rosewyn knew if he was in that position they couldn't be together. Firstly because her father would completely disapprove it, and secondly because he was always busy with patrolling and teaching combat to the new soldiers, and most recently combating war. Now that wasn't a worry for them. They only needed to keep her safe, which wasn't hard in this small town.
Rosewyn looked into his eyes, and she thought she might have seen a small glimpse of more than their normal friendliness. She took a chance then and leaned in, but paused before, allowing him time to pull away. When he didn't, it was him who moved next. Reaching out, he cupped her face in his hands and brushed her hair out of her face. His lips met her's and he kissed Rosewyn softly for a moment, then pulled away to look into her eyes. She smiled. He smiled too, and it touched his whole face this time. I leaned in again and kissed him deeper. She wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders, and liked that they felt strong and broad. He took one hand from her face and placed it on the small of her back, pulling her closer.
She had to pull away then, breathing hard. He was breathing hard too. He smiled a big smile and then kissed her nose, and then turned to leave. She didn't want him to go, but knew he had to. They needed things around the house and he was also patrolling the small town.
I sat on the end of my bed and waited for my breathing to slow before I got up and walked to the bathroom to splash my face with clean water, waking me up from my very light headed haze.
