`` Everything Else
Family: Her parents are Gabriel and Lorina Hanna Descoudres. She has nine siblings: Kory, who is twenty-five, Tylen, who is twenty-three, Thea, who is twenty-one, Jade, who is seventeen, Maura and Ambrose, who are twins at age fifteen, Blaise, who is eight, Rae, who is four, and Ryn, who died an infant.
Character History: Krestal is a daughter of Gabriel Descousdres, (history professor at the University at Piskrà City) and his wife Lorina Hanna Descousdres. Krestal is the fourth child. She has two older brothers, Kory and Tylen, and an older sister, Thea. She also had six younger siblings, including her sister Jade, with whom she was very close. One of her younger brothers died as an infant.
At the time of her birth, Krestal’s father was a high school teacher but as soon after appointed to teach history at the college level. As her father became more and more involved at the college, and her mother spent her time socializing with the village’s finest, Krestal was almost four – and she was starting to notice things about her family that was different from other families she saw at town. Her brothers warned her to say nothing about their wolf phases (indeed, the Descourdres clan is a pack of werewolves) and so that has been a family secret.
Krestal grew up primarily in the company of the two sisters nearest to her in age: Thea, who was nearly three years older, and Jade, who was two years younger. She and her family regularly spent holidays in their holiday home called Penmorfa, on the other side of Piskrà. It was at this holiday home that she met Audren, a lynx, when she was eight. At first she thought it was normal to have a stray cat following her around – but her brothers teased her perpetually. As time wore on, Krestal and Audren formed a sort of bond, where she could hear the animals’ thoughts, and ‘Ren could understand her. When Krestal was seventeen, she left Piskrà City on a grand tour of the isle, finally settling down in Flöi Village, wanting to learn more about humans.
Other: Krestal presents a calm and serene face to the world, and can seem shy, even distant around others. But inside she is anything but serene, having a capacity for personal caring that can be rare among teenagers. Krestal cares deeply about the inner life of a few special persons, or about a favorite cause in the world at large – depending on what day it is.
Krestal has a profound sense of idealism that comes from a strong personal sense of right and wrong. She conceives of the world as an ethical, honorable place, full of wondrous possibilities and potential goods. In fact, to understand Krestal, we must understand that her deep commitment to the positive and the good is almost boundless and selfless, inspiring her to make extraordinary sacrifices for someone or something she believes in. Set off from the rest of humanity by her privacy and apparent inability to talk to people she doesn’t know, Krestal can feel even more isolated in the purity of her idealism.
Also, Krestal might well feel a sense of separation because of her often misunderstood childhood. Krestal lived a fantasy-filled childhood – she is the princess of fairy tales – an attitude which, sadly, is frowned upon, or even punished, by her parents. With parents who want her to get her head out of the clouds, Krestal began to believe it is wrong to be so fanciful, so dreamy, and has come to see herself as an ugly duckling. In truth, she is just strangely optimistic about everything.
Krestal is adaptable; she welcomes new ideas and new information, and is patient with complicated situations – but impatient with routine details. She is keenly aware of people and their feelings, and relate well with most others. Because of her deep-seated reserve, however, she can be quite happy alone as well as with people. When making decisions, Krestal follows her heart, not her head. She often will make errors of fact, but seldom of feeling. She has a natural interest in scholarly activities and has a remarkable facility with language. She has a gift for interpreting stories, as well as for creating them, and thus often writes in lyric, poetic fashion – but always in her dark green pen. Frequently, she hears a call to go forth into the world and help others, a call she seems ready to answer, even if she must sacrifice her own comfort.
Krestal can be over-accepting of others and needs to be more skeptical at times. Her need to please everyone makes her reluctant to critique any one but herself. This excessive desire to trust others makes her a target for hurt feelings and disadvantages. When the freedom to act on her instincts is limited, Krestal becomes bored, restless, and passively defiant. She is skilled at seeming to comply with regulations while annoying those who cause her distress.
Role-Play Sample: Krestal Descousdres had awoken earlier than usual. Again. She didn't necessarily care for time -from it was a ridiculous way of measurement, far too detailed and complex for her liking. Time itself wasn't divided, and more than anything it wasn't in multiples of six. Six was only two numbers away eight... and one away from seven. This bemused her greatly, because seven eight nine... But she was mostly okay with the number seven.
Krestal shook her head, ash-blonde bangs sliding to the right and to the left as she did so. Still musing on the concept of time - which was nothing but numbers, anyway - and numbers were completely useless, unless there were letters with them, top. Letters. She could understand letters. She frowned, leaving time to the Penmorfa's great grandfather clock (which scared her every time she was near it - it had the number eight on it) and staring vaguely in the direction of the window, which was glowing white with the sunlight. She wasn't thinking about one thing in particular, but many things were drifting around in her mind, unfocused.
When Audren padded into the attic, she looked at him and smiled, turquoise eyes half-closing as she put her left shoe on, and then her right, and pushed her waist-length hair back from her shoulders. It was probably messy, but that was okay - she definitely would mess it up by the time she got to school - she had to walk through a briar patch everyday, but that was perfectly alright. She loved the briar roses. That got her thinking about Sleeping Beauty, and then fairy tales, and then -
‘Your mind is the ocean?' Ren asked in his low, growling voice that at the moment was more a purr of amusement than an actual growl. He was sitting back on his haunches, his tail moving back and forth leisurely, his head cocked to the side. Ren could hear her thoughts as if they were spoken aloud - but he was part of her soul, after all.
Krestal nodded. "Yes. I believe so." She was still staring vaguely at the light from the window, watching the dust do its little dust-dance.
'Is that something I should be concerned of?' Ren asked, shuffling across the wood floor, closer to her. His golden eyes peered at her with concern.
‘No. I think it means that my mind is growing, drifting apart." she said, still smiling, turning to face him and pet his ear gently.
Silence. Then Ren asked, 'What do you mean by that?'
"I don't think it means anything." she said serenely, eyes closing now as she leaned her head back. "The land was once all together, something huge. Then it started to break apart, because of the sea."
Ren blinked, then stood up. 'Alright, Kres,' he sighed. 'You should get to work before you dream the day away.'
"I already dreamed the night away... what's wrong with losing more time? It can be stolen back.' Time. That concept of time again.
'You have work.' He looked at her, reprimanding. 'You have a responsibility.' His tail twitched. Sometimes Krestal was so unreasonable.
"Alright." She smiled and stood up, gracefully, leisurely, then scooped Ren up in her arms, walking down the stairs. Penmorfa was a house old enough to have stairs, so she didn't have to bother with a ladder. Climbing a ladder and holding a lynx at the same time was a rather difficult thing to do. When she reached the ground flood, she walked through to the living room, grabbed her bag, and out the door; three steps later, she realized it. "Oh!"
'What's wrong?'
"My shoes. They're inside." She turned and grabbed her shoes, then walked the rest of the way to the school. It was a rather long walk from Penmorfa to Erion, the Blacksmith’s Lodge, but of course she had gotten up earlier than she'd wanted to - so she got there a little earlier than everyone else. When she got inside, she found her locker, peered into the empty space, and, slowly, put her bag in it. Then she set Ren on the ground, walking through the halls silently - she was still wearing only stockings - and out to the grounds. She needed a tree.
'You are not climbing a tree in a dress.'
“I’m wearing breeches," she said, glancing down at her feet and wiggling her toes.
'But also, a dress. No trees today.’
"Darn." She bit her lip, then sighed. "I will just sit under one." She smiled, feeling clever clever clever - more clever than a squirrel - and sat in the grace underneath a tree, closing her eyes and breathing in the fresh, nature-y scent around her. "Mmh..." Then she opened her eyes and put her left shoe on, then her right one, glancing around as she did so. Her job required her fire power, but she still had a little time. Time enough to rest.
